Muslims in Britian

For my dissertation I am doing the topic of ‘Media’s representation of Islam pre/post 9/11.

During my research I came across one article that tugged at my heart strings. Many of you will be aware of the Rushdie Crisis and The Gulf Crisis, afters these two incidents was the first time Britain had seen the spread of ‘Islamophobia’. Freedom of speech let the Muslims of then Britain to speak out against its states actions, for which they received much back lash, a senior officer for the police at the time was reported saying “dark-skinned people were attacked because they were considered to be supporters of Saddam Hussein” this was after racist crime and attacks had risen 100%.

Here is demonstration of how one’s own state is being their enemy; it upsets me that at the time people didn’t have the law on their side. Instead of the law to look for its citizen’s best interest it chose to ignore these people. Today we live in a country which every single day has the argument of “freedom of speech” where was this when people were being attacked for condemning the actions of the British government against Iraq? Surely that was also their right to Freedom of Speech.
